One of the questions we're asked most often at Highland Wood is:
"Do I need to paint or stain my planter?"
The simple answer is yes – we highly recommend it.
Our handcrafted planters are built using structural-grade, pressure-treated timber, making them strong, durable and suitable for outdoor use. However, applying a quality wood stain or exterior paint provides an extra layer of protection that helps keep your planter looking its best for years to come.
Why Paint or Stain a Planter?
Wood is a natural material and, when left outdoors, it is constantly exposed to rain, sunlight and changing temperatures.
Over time, untreated timber will naturally weather to a silver-grey colour. Some people love this rustic appearance, while others prefer to maintain the warm, natural look of freshly cut timber.
Painting or staining your planter helps to:
- Protect the timber from the weather
- Slow down natural ageing
- Reduce surface cracking caused by the sun
- Enhance the appearance of the wood
- Match your planter to your garden style
Paint or Stain – Which Is Better?
Both are excellent choices, but they create different finishes.
Wood Stain
Wood stain soaks into the timber, allowing the natural grain to remain visible.
It's ideal if you want a traditional wooden appearance while adding protection against the weather.
Popular colours include:
- Light Oak
- Dark Oak
- Walnut
- Cedar
- Rustic Brown
Exterior Wood Paint
Paint gives a solid colour finish and completely changes the look of your planter.
Popular colours include:
- Sage Green
- Anthracite Grey
- Black
- White
- Heritage Green
Paint can create a contemporary look and is perfect if you want your planter to become a feature in the garden.
When Should I Treat My Planter?
We recommend treating your planter before planting, or as soon as possible after receiving it.
This allows you to coat all the external surfaces evenly and gives the timber maximum protection from the beginning.
Always follow the manufacturer's drying times before adding compost and plants.
How Often Should I Recoat It?
Most quality exterior wood stains and paints last between two and five years, depending on the product and how exposed the planter is to the weather.
A quick clean and fresh coat every few years will help keep your planter looking fantastic.
Can I Leave My Planter Untreated?
Yes.
Our planters are made from pressure-treated timber, so they can be left untreated if you prefer.
However, they will gradually weather to a natural silver-grey colour, which is completely normal and won't affect the structural integrity of the planter.
If you'd like to preserve the original timber colour or add extra protection, staining or painting is the best option.
Our Recommendation
At Highland Wood, we recommend applying a quality exterior wood stain or paint to maximise the lifespan and appearance of your planter.
It's a small amount of maintenance that can make a big difference over the years.
Whether you prefer a natural timber finish or a bold modern colour, protecting your planter will help it continue looking great season after season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paint the inside of my planter?
We don't recommend painting the inside if your planter is lined. The liner provides the protection, while the timber naturally breathes.
Should I stain the bottom of the planter?
Yes. If possible, coat all external timber surfaces, including the underside, before placing the planter in its final position.
Can I paint over an old stain?
Yes, as long as the surface is clean, dry and prepared according to the paint manufacturer's instructions.
