Product Care & Warranty Information

Last updated: 20 October 2025

At Highland Wood Ltd, every planter and timber product is handmade in the Highlands of Scotland using locally sourced, structural-grade FSC timber. With the right care and treatment, your products will last for many years. This page explains how to care for your purchase and what is covered under our warranty.

1) Timber and natural variation

  • All our planters and timber products are made from natural wood, which means every piece is unique. Variations in grain, texture, knots, and slight colour differences are normal and part of the wood’s natural character.
  • Because timber is a living material, it will continue to move and breathe after installation. Small cracks, splits, or changes in shape can appear as the wood adjusts to its environment — this is completely natural and not considered a defect.
  • Movement is most common during the first 3–6 months as the timber acclimatises to its surroundings.

2) Timber treatment

  • All timber used by Highland Wood Ltd is treated with an organic wood preservative that helps protect against insects and weather exposure.
  • While the treatment provides a base level of protection, we strongly recommend applying a surface treatment such as exterior paint, wood stain, or oil for additional durability and colour retention.
  • Surface treatments help protect against rain, frost, and UV exposure and can significantly extend the lifespan of your planter.
  • We recommend re-coating your planter every 12–24 months depending on location and exposure.

3) Placement and drainage

  • For best results, place planters on a level, well-drained surface such as slabs or gravel rather than bare soil.
  • Ensure there is adequate drainage — most planters are supplied with drainage holes, but if you line the inside with plastic or fabric, make sure excess water can still escape.
  • Waterlogging or poor drainage can lead to premature timber decay and is not covered under warranty.

4) Painting or staining

  • We recommend using high-quality, outdoor-rated wood paint or stain suitable for softwood.
  • Apply in dry conditions following the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring the timber is clean and dry before coating.
  • Painting the inside of planters is optional but can add extra protection against moisture.
  • Always test your chosen colour on a small area first, as natural timber tone can affect the final shade.

5) Cleaning and maintenance

  • Keep planters clean by brushing away soil, moss, or leaves that can trap moisture.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or jet washers, which can damage the timber surface.
  • If you notice small cracks or open joints, apply an outdoor wood filler or a light coat of oil or stain to reseal and protect the timber.

6) Warranty coverage

  • All Highland Wood Ltd products come with a 12-month workmanship warranty covering structural defects resulting from manufacturing errors or poor workmanship under normal domestic use.
  • This warranty does not cover:
    • Natural timber movement, splits, or cracks
    • Damage caused by weather, poor drainage, or waterlogging
    • Damage caused by misuse, neglect, modification, or incorrect installation
    • General wear and tear, fading, or discolouration
  • If you believe your product has a manufacturing fault, please contact us within 12 months of delivery through our Contact Page and include photos of the issue.
  • We will assess the problem and may offer a repair, replacement, or partial refund depending on the circumstances.

7) Extending product life

  • For maximum longevity, we recommend:
    • Applying a quality protective finish before outdoor use
    • Re-coating every 12–24 months
    • Keeping planters elevated and well-drained
    • Storing under cover during prolonged severe weather
  • With basic maintenance, our planters can last for many years outdoors and age beautifully over time.
